Back in 1999, when my first F-2000 was organized in Vigo, it was hard to convince the politicians about the EXCELLENCE of this sport. That race went ahead though, and was almost done on my own money and own boats …... (investing in future)
The next year, we organized the second Vigo race. This time, with full support of all the City , Port authorities, sponsors, and thousands of public; was a complete success.
After that I get involved in the UIM and the budget for a F2000 event was considerably bigger ,,, so we waited till the class was ready…… and then did it .
That was the year, 2005. We adopted the fantastic name of " UIM BoatGP World Championship" , additionally, a Continental European race was held there, before the BoatGP in Seoul. Korea which was starting next in the calendar. The Vigo races were amazing!! I will always remember that right -left turn in the end of the track , blind and extremely close to the public.
Jay Price, after a whole night in hospital very sick, jumped in the Molgaard and got second position in a closely fought no holds barred race with Colin Jelf, who won both.
Vigo, Vigo ,,, you know ? It is the place where I was born and carries a lot of my boating memories in that water, crossing from my house in Coruxo beach to Cies Islands.. ( nominated the best beach in the world last year!!!)
Now we have " lost" this BoatGP race ( for the moment ) , but I'm happy that the other best powerboat class in the world is going there. During my last week stay in Vigo, believe me, I saw such a great pre-event promotion that never happened in any other powerboat event. Therefore, I am really excited to see my BoatGp and Powerboat 1 joining together at the same venue the same water.
I will certainly be there, and invite "everyone" of you to join us. The best people will enjoy the best Power Boating in the best place…... FABULOUS !!
